ModBESS President Appointed to CIGRE Working Group on Grid Resilience

CIGRE, the premier international organization of electric utilities, has appointed Fernando L. Alvarado, President of ModBESS, as the senior U.S. representative to CIGRE Working Group C6.45 with the task of defining terminology and assessing the ways in which utilities around the world plan to deal with electrical grid resilience.

There has been a worldwide increase in extreme grid events leading to massive power outages. Whether human-caused or related to weather, natural disasters or changes in technology, they all have the same effect of causing rare but extensive outages within the electric grid. Led by Nasser Usman from New Zealand, CIGRE Working Group C6.45 will survey the various causes of the events and come up with means to characterize and develop metrics that allow for the assessment and monitoring of the preparedness of the various utility grids against future events.

The group will assess not only the utility response but will also examine how user-end and distributed technologies (such as those advocated and developed by ModBESS) can play a key role in addressing the problem of extended outages.

The group had its inaugural meeting in Paris on Aug. 31, 2022, with most members attending in person and a few attending remotely.

For further information or to participate in the various surveys the group plans to do over the next few months, please contact Fernando at fernando@modbess.com.
